Selon certaines informations, le processus de rénovation de la cathédrale Saint-Louis du diocèse de Saint-Louis au Sénégal, qui a duré une quinzaine d’années, a été décrit comme une source d’inspiration pour les valeurs de «compréhension, collaboration, unité» parmi le peuple de Dieu en Occident Nation africaine.
S’exprimant lors de la remise de la cathédrale rénovée vieille de 192 ans, l’évêque du diocèse de Saint-Louis a également rendu hommage à ceux qui ont facilité sa construction.
«La rénovation de notre cathédrale inspire la compréhension, la collaboration, l’unité entre les Sénégalais et le désir pour nous de travailler ensemble pour la croissance de l’Église», a déclaré Mgr Ernest Sambou le jeudi 8 octobre.
Mgr Sambou a ajouté: «La rénovation de cette Église a été un très long processus qui a commencé en 2005. Nous sommes très heureux et nous remercions Dieu que notre Église soit à nouveau ouverte au culte.»
Il a salué ceux qui étaient impliqués dans la construction de la cathédrale et a exhorté le peuple de Dieu sous sa juridiction à faire bon usage de la cathédrale rénovée en disant: «Ceux qui étaient là avant nous ont fait ce qu’ils pouvaient faire. Aujourd’hui, ils ne sont plus présents mais nous avons le devoir de maintenir et de nous assurer que les structures qu’ils ont sacrifiées et construites sont en bon état.
“Certains des bâtiments qu’ils ont construits sont maintenant vieux et c’est maintenant à nous de nous unir pour voir comment rénover ces structures qui font partie de l’histoire du diocèse de Saint-Louis”, a ajouté le prélat sénégalais de 72 ans. .
Consacrée et ouverte au public en 1828, la cathédrale Saint-Louis, qui est un patrimoine de l’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) est connue pour être la plus ancienne église en Afrique de l’Ouest. Avec le temps, la structure s’est affaiblie, posant une menace pour les fidèles et les résidents locaux. Les travaux de rénovation ont été lancés en 2005 après l’effondrement du toit de la cathédrale. Les travaux ont cependant stagné et n’ont repris qu’en 2018.
Le diocèse de Saint-Louis s’est associé au gouvernement sénégalais et à l’Agence française de développement (AFD) pour rénover la cathédrale pour un coût d’environ 1 milliard de FCFA (1 799 135,00 $ US).
S’exprimant également lors de la remise de la cathédrale rénovée le 8 octobre, le ministre sénégalais de la Culture et de la Communication, Abdoulaye Diop a exprimé son appréciation pour la coopération dynamique entre le gouvernement et l’Église catholique au Sénégal qui a contribué à la rénovation de la cathédrale Saint-Louis, qui a été classé au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO en 2000.
«La rénovation de la cathédrale Saint-Louis est une preuve suffisante que le Sénégal est un pays de tolérance, où coexistent différentes religions et croyances, un pays où chacun peut pratiquer sa religion à sa guise», a déclaré le ministre Diop.
Il a ajouté: «Aujourd’hui, je suis heureux de remettre les clés de ce bâtiment historique très cher à l’UNESCO et à la ville de Saint-Louis, vieille de 300 ans.»
De son côté, le directeur général de l’Agence sénégalaise pour la promotion des investissements et des travaux publics (APIX), Mountaga Sy a déclaré: «La réhabilitation de la cathédrale Saint-Louis a permis de restaurer le patrimoine, le patrimoine socio-culturel et économique. statut du bâtiment. »

Bishop Sambou added, “The renovation of this Church was a very long process that started in 2005. We are very happy and we thank God that our Church is once again open for worship.”
He acknowledged those who were involved in the construction of the Cathedral and urged the people of God under his jurisdiction to make good use of the renovated Cathedral saying, “Those who were there before us have done what they could do. Today, they are no longer present but we have the duty to maintain and ensure the structures they sacrificed and build are in a good state.”
“Some of the buildings they constructed are now old and it is now up to us to be united to see how to renovate these structures which are part of the history of Saint-Louis Diocese,” the 72-year-old Senegalese Prelate further said.
Consecrated and opened to the public in 1828, Saint-Louis Cathedral, which is a heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is known to be the oldest church building in West Africa. With the passage of time, the structure weakened, posing a threat to worshippers and local residents. The renovation works were initiated in 2005 after the roof of the Cathedral caved in. The works however stalled and were only resumed in 2018.
The Diocese of Saint-Louis partnered with the Senegalese government and the French Development Agency (AFD) to renovate the Cathedral at a cost of about 1 billion FCFA (US$1,799,135.00).
Also speaking at the handing over of the renovated Cathedral on October 8, Senegal’s Minister of Culture and Communication, Abdoulaye Diop expressed his appreciation for the dynamic cooperation between the government and the Catholic Church in Senegal that aided the renovation of the Saint-Louis Cathedral, which was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
“The renovation of the Saint-Louis Cathedral is sufficient proof that Senegal is a country of tolerance, where different religions and beliefs coexist, a country where each individual can practice his or her religion as he or she wishes,” said Minister Diop.
He added, “Today, I am happy to hand over the keys of this historic building very dear to UNESCO and the 300-year-old city of Saint-Louis.”
