Father Pietro Bovati, Jesuit and secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, was chosen to preach the traditional Lenten spiritual retreat from the Curia, which began on Sunday, March 1 in Ariccia, south of Rome. Father Pietro Bovati is a professor of exegesis and the author of a noted book, Restoring Justice. Procedures, vocabulary, guidelines, published in 1986. Born June 10, 1940, he entered the Society of Jesus at 19 before being ordained in 1971. He studied theology for a time at the Faculty of Lyon as well as philosophy in Padua. He is a Doctor of Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute, of which he was rector from 1997 to 2008.

In 2014, he was appointed by Pope Francis secretary of the Biblical Commission, of which he was appointed member by Benedict XVI in 2008. He succeeded this post of secretary to another Jesuit, Father Klemens Stock, who occupied this in office since 2002. The Pontifical Biblical Commission, founded in 1902, is attached to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Le père Pietro Bovati, jésuite et secrétaire de la Commission biblique pontificale, a été choisi pour prêcher la traditionnelle retraite spirituelle de Carême de la Curie, qui a débuté dimanche 1er mars à Ariccia, au sud de Rome. Malade, le pape François a renoncé à s’y rendre et suivra les méditations depuis le Vatican.

Il est docteur en Écriture Sainte de l’Institut biblique pontifical, dont il a été recteur de 1997 à 2008.

En 2014, il a été nommé par le pape François secrétaire de la Commission biblique, dont il avait été nommé membre par Benoît XVI en 2008. Il a succédé à ce poste de secrétaire à un autre jésuite, le père Klemens Stock, qui occupait cette fonction depuis 2002. La Commission biblique pontificale, fondée en 1902, est rattachée à la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi. Le président de la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi – aujourd’hui le cardinal Luis Ladaria Ferrer – préside aussi la Commission biblique. Le père Pietro Bovati y a récemment dirigé une étude sur l’anthropologie biblique, c’est-à-dire la vision de l’être humain que porte la Bible, intitulée « Qu’est-ce que l’homme ? ».

Les exercices spirituels deCarême ont été créés par Pie XI en 1929. À l’origine, ils avaient lieu la première semaine de l’Avent. Mais Paul VI décida, en février 1964, de les repousser à la première semaine de Carême. Le cardinal Karol Wojtyla les avait prêchés en 1976, et le cardinal Ratzinger en 1983. Depuis le début du pontificat du pape François, cette retraite de Carême a toujours lieu hors les murs du Vatican.
