The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed a Local Ordinary for Burkina Faso’s Tenkodogo Diocese. Information reaching the office of RECOWACERAO NEWS AGENCY, RECONA declared that Monsignor David Koudougou has been appointed the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tenkodogo in Burkina Faso on the 06 of February 2025. Details of the news has it that Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor David Koudougou who has been serving as the Diocesan Administrator of the Tenkodogo Catholic Diocese in Burkina Faso as the new Bishop of the Diocese.
The appointment of Monsignor Koudougou as the new Bishop of the Burkinabe Diocese was made public on Thursday, February 6, and published by the Holy See press office on the same day.
The Diocese of Tenkodogo became vacant on 16 October 2023 following the transfer of Archbishop Prosper Kontiebo to Ouagadougou Archdiocese. Until his transfer, Archbishop Kontiebo had been shepherding the Diocese since his Episcopal ordination in June 2012.
Born on 1 August 1972 in Tenkodogo, the Bishop-elect was ordained a Priest on 14 July 2001 after completing his studies in Philosophy and Theology at the Saint Jean Baptiste Major Seminary in Wayalghin, in the catholic Archdiocese of Ouagadougou.
The Bishop-elect has served in different positions including the Parochial Vicar of the Sacred Heart Parish in Garango; the Parochial Vicar of Boussouma and the Parochial Vicar of Saint Paul of Moraga.
The alumnus of Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law has also served as an official of the Metropolitan Tribunal of Koupéla and a member of the College of Consultors of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Koupéla.
The Bishop-elect who is a Professor of Canon Law and Homiletics at the Saint Pierre Claver Major Seminary in Koumi has served as General Secretary of the Episcopal Commission for Ecclesiastical Tribunals and Legal Affairs of the Episcopal Conference.
He has also served as the Episcopal Delegate to the Diocesan Council for Catholic Education in the Diocese of Tenkodogo; an Official of the Ecclesiastical Tribunal, and a member of the College of Consultors of the Diocese of Tenkodogo.
Once ordained, Mons. Koudougou will be the second Local Ordinary of the Burkinabe Episcopal See erected in February 2012, curved from the Diocese of Fada N’Gourma.
Located within the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Koupéla, the Diocese of Tenkodogo measures 10,047 square kilometers has a total population of 1,394,751 with 192,352 Catholics representing 13.8 percent, according to the 2023 statistics.
