Father Cornelius Manzak Damulak, who was abducted on February 6 in the Catholic Diocese of Shendam, Nigeria, has managed to escape and is currently recovering in a healthcare facility located in the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja. This information was confirmed by sources received by RECOWA CERAO NEWS AGENCY (RECONA).

According to information gathered by RECONA, Father Joseph Oscar Pam, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Shendam, stated that Father Damulak successfully escaped on February 13. He deeply thanks the Catholic community for their spiritual support and continuous prayers.

« He escaped from his captors on February 13 and is currently receiving medical care in an undisclosed location in Abuja, » said Father Pam. He also warmly thanked all those who prayed for the release of the priest, who was abducted from his residence in Zuma 2, located in the Bwari Regional Council of the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria.

« We express our deep gratitude to all those who supported us with their prayers during this difficult and trying period. May God bless you and reward you abundantly for your solidarity, » he added.

However, the joy of this release is overshadowed by another abduction. Father Moses Gyang Jah, from St. Mary Maijuju Parish in the Diocese of Shendam, was kidnapped on Wednesday, February 19, along with his niece and the parish council president, Mr. Nyam Ajiji. Unfortunately, the latter was killed by the captors.

« Father Moses has not yet been released, and his captors only made contact with the diocese yesterday, » said Father Pam, who called on the Catholic community to continue praying for his release.

Since 2009, Nigeria has been facing growing insecurity due to the actions of the terrorist group Boko Haram, which seeks to establish an Islamic state in the country. This extremist group, one of the most feared in Africa, has been carrying out numerous attacks against civilian and religious targets.

Additionally, the involvement of Fulani militias, mostly composed of Muslim herders, has exacerbated the situation by increasing inter-communal violence.

In response to this persistent threat, the Nigerian Catholic Church continues to call for peace and to seek prayers and solidarity from the international community.
