The body at a meeting in Kenema, Sierra-Leone, agreed to develop regular advocacy strategies by collaborating with ECOWAS/AU/EU/UN to condemn host hostile transit countries accountable for the abuse of the rights of migrants and refugees.
They charged the church to liaise with government of the region and social actors to designate and enact national legislation for migrants, refugees and raise awareness of the dangers and risks of migration.
The Episcopal Commission for Mission, Pontifical Mission, Migrant and Refugee, Apostolate of the Sea and Tourism, a working committee of RECOWA also charged the various governments in the sub-region to hold human traffickers and their syndicates responsible for irregular migration through the process of the law.
According to the resolution signed by Most Rev. Denis Komivi Amuzu-Dzakpah after the meeting tagged KENEMA DECLARATION, the committee also want RECOWA to collaborate with SECAM in encouraging the host countries to set up inclusive reintegration programmes for migrants and refugees.
The Episcopal Commission for Mission, Pontifical Mission, Migrant and Refugee, Apostolate of the Sea and Tourism also wants the episcopal conferences of member states to identify, train and assign chaplains to the apostolate of Migrants and Refugees and create an enabling environment that would help to well come the migrants into the communities.
The committee also called for resources to support the policies for the regulation of migrations at the parish, diocesans and regional levels.
On integration, the meeting advised that the various episcopal conferences to lobby at the level of national and regional structures to allocate resources to support the establishment and management of reintegration programs of migrants and refugees.
