Pope Francis apologized Wednesday for his widely-viewed slap of a woman who had grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year’s Eve. The image of Francis slapping his way free from the clutches of the admirer was an instant hit on social media.

A personal apology followed. “We lose patience many times,” Francis confessed. “It happens to me too. I apologize for the bad example given yesterday,” the head of the Catholic church said before celebrating Mass at the Vatican. Twitter enthusiasts commented with abandon on the pontiff’s prompt riposte to the woman. Pope Francis had greeted children before the Nativity scene on Saint Peter’s square and was turning away when the woman who had crossed herself then cried out something, pulled on his hand and almost caused him to fall. The 83-year-old pope grimaced before managing to break free by slapping her hand twice. He continued his tour, walking with some difficulty while maintaining a slightly greater distance from the crowd, and gradually relaxed again as he came into contact with other children.

Twitter comments were mostly supportive of the pontiff’s instinctive reaction. “HE IS HUMAN. Been (sic) a Pope doesn’t make you immune to Pain or avoid Reaction to pain,” one typical comment read. In his first Mass of the New Year, the pontiff later denounced “all violence against women” as “a profanation of God, born of a woman.” Francis also said women were “the source of life” but deplored that they were constantly “offended, beaten, abused and forced into prostitution” and forced to “suppress the life they carry within” them. He emphasized that the “rebirth of humanity began with a woman,” and bemoaned that women’s bodies were “sacrificed on the profane altars of advertising, profit, and pornography.”

L’image de Francis giflant son chemin sans les griffes de l’admirateur a été un succès instantané sur les réseaux sociaux.

Des excuses personnelles ont suivi. «Nous perdons patience plusieurs fois», a avoué Francis. “Ça m’arrive aussi. Je m’excuse pour le mauvais exemple donné hier », a déclaré le chef de l’église catholique avant de célébrer la messe au Vatican. Les amateurs de Twitter ont commenté avec abandon la riposte rapide du pontife à la femme. Le pape François avait salué les enfants avant la crèche sur la place Saint-Pierre et se détournait lorsque la femme qui s’était traversée avait alors crié quelque chose, lui avait tiré la main et l’avait presque fait tomber. Le pape de 83 ans a grimacé avant de réussir à se libérer en lui frappant la main deux fois. Il a continué sa tournée, marchant avec quelques difficultés tout en maintenant une distance légèrement plus grande de la foule, et s’est progressivement détendu à nouveau en entrant en contact avec d’autres enfants.

Les commentaires de Twitter étaient pour la plupart favorables à la réaction instinctive du pontife. «IL EST HUMAIN. Être (sic) un pape ne vous rend pas immunisé contre la douleur ou évite la réaction à la douleur », lit-on dans un commentaire typique. Dans sa première messe du Nouvel An, le pontife a ensuite dénoncé «toute violence contre les femmes» comme «une profanation de Dieu, née d’une femme». François a également déclaré que les femmes étaient «la source de la vie» mais a déploré qu’elles soient constamment « offensés, battus, maltraités et contraints à la prostitution »et contraints de« supprimer la vie qu’ils y portent ». Il a souligné que «la renaissance de l’humanité a commencé avec une femme» et a déploré que les corps des femmes aient été «sacrifiés sur les autels profanes de la publicité, du profit et de la pornographie».
