The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic incident that occurred on New Year’s Eve at St. Columbus Catholic Church in Amaimo. The shooting claimed the life of a young man and left another injured. In a statement dated January 2 and signed by Archbishop Lucius I. Ugorji, the Archdiocese conveyed condolences to the bereaved family and offered prayers for the eternal repose of the deceased and the swift recovery of the injured.
The circumstances surrounding the tragedy are currently under police investigation. In his message, the Archbishop urged parishioners to remain calm and avoid any unrest while awaiting the outcome of the inquiry.
According to local sources, the parish priest, Father Joseph Enyinaya, was arrested on January 2 in connection with the incident. The tragedy unfolded on December 31 when fireworks were lit inside St. Columbus Church, located in the Amaimo Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, in southeastern Nigeria.
Preliminary reports suggest that the priest fired warning shots into the air in an attempt to disperse a group of young men who were setting off fireworks inside the church. Unfortunately, he allegedly lost control of his firearm, resulting in accidental gunfire that struck the victims.
The Imo State Police have confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the facts and assign responsibility for the incident. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for strict safety measures, particularly in places of worship, to prevent similar occurrences.
Both religious and civil authorities have called for calm and reaffirmed their commitment to uncovering the truth, ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
