Here the Malagasy Lutheran Church is still in shock after the assassination on Sunday February 23 of the pastor and theologian Hélène Ralivao.

Several personalities from the Lutheran Church worldwide have paid tribute to him.

On Sunday, February 23, the lifeless body of Hélène Ralivao, the first theologian of the Malagasy Lutheran Church, was found in a cemetery in Ambohiba, a small town located in the commune of Antehiroka, in Antananarivo. At 63, the pastor and pastor’s wife was the General Secretary of the Lutheran Church Women’s Association.

On the day of the drama, this mother of five had attended Sunday worship at the Lutheran church in Ambohibao. According to the checks made by the police, she left the church around 1:30 p.m. to join the members of her association in a training center in Morondava – another district – where a bus was to take them to the capital to assist at a meeting. When she did not see her coming, her relatives tried to reach her and looked for her in vain. Finally, around 11:45 pm, an alert indicating the presence of a naked woman’s body next to a tomb in the Ambohiba cemetery reached the gendarmerie: it was the theologian.

Promotion of women’s rights

Well known for her work in promoting the rights and dignity of women in the Church and in society, the pastor had represented her country as a delegate to the assemblies of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) in Hong Kong in 1997 and in Winnipeg, Canada, in 2003.

“As women in Africa and in the global fellowship, we share the pain and anger at this senseless murder, but we do not lose hope or determination to continue fighting violence against women,” said declared the regional secretary of the Lutheran Churches for Africa, Pastor Elieshi Mungure, at the announcement of his death.

During a prayer service led in honor of Ralivao in the chapel of the Ecumenical Center of Geneva on February 27, the general secretary of the Lutheran World Federation, the Reverend Martin Junge, paid a vibrant tribute to the Malagasy theologian who ‘he described as “a faithful steward of the Church and the empowerment of women”. With her, Pastor Ralivao has been the mentor of many people and is committed to combating violence against women. “Let this sad moment become a new day for congregations and the Church as a whole to become a space of re-engagement in a firm stance against violence against women,” he said.

The Malagasy Lutheran Church has existed since 1950. It has more than 3 million worshipers and is the result of the merger of Lutheran congregations in the central and southern regions of the island.

Dimanche 23 février, le corps sans vie d’Hélène Ralivao, première théologienne de l’Église luthérienne malgache, a été retrouvé dans un cimetière d’Ambohiba, une petite ville située dans la commune d’Antehiroka, à Antananarivo. À 63 ans, cette pasteure et épouse de pasteur était la Secrétaire générale de l’Association des femmes de l’Église luthérienne.

Le jour du drame, cette mère de cinq enfants avait assisté au culte dominical à l’église luthérienne à Ambohibao. D’après les recoupements faits par la police, elle a quitté l’église vers 13 heures 30 pour rejoindre les membres de son association dans un centre de formation à Morondava – un autre quartier- où un car devait les emmener dans la capitale pour assister à une réunion. Ne la voyant pas venir au rendez-vous, ses proches ont tenté de la joindre et l’ont cherché en vain. Finalement, vers 23 heures 45, une alerte indiquant la présence d’un corps dénudé de femme à côté d’un tombeau du cimetière Ambohiba est parvenue à la gendarmerie : il s’agissait de la théologienne.

Promotion des droits des femmes

Bien connue pour son travail de promotion des droits et de la dignité des femmes dans l’Église et dans la société, la pasteure avait représenté son pays en tant que déléguée aux assemblées de la Fédération luthérienne mondiale (FLM) à Hong Kong en 1997 et à Winnipeg, au Canada, en 2003.

« En tant que femmes en Afrique et dans la communion mondiale, nous partageons la douleur et la colère face à ce meurtre insensé, mais nous ne perdons ni espoir ni détermination à poursuivre la lutte contre la violence à l’égard des femmes », a déclaré la secrétaire régionale des Églises luthériennes pour l’Afrique, la pasteure Elieshi Mungure, à l’annonce de sa mort.

Lors d’un service de prière dirigé en l’honneur de Ralivao dans la chapelle du Centre œcuménique de Genève le 27 février, le secrétaire général de la Fédération luthérienne mondiale, le révérend Martin Junge, a rendu un vibrant hommage à la théologienne malgache qu’il a décrite comme « une fidèle intendante de l’Église et de l’autonomisation des femmes ». À ses eux, la pasteure Ralivao a été le mentor de nombreuses personnes et s’est engagée à lutter contre la violence à l’égard des femmes. « Que ce triste moment devienne un nouveau jour pour les congrégations et l’Église dans son ensemble pour devenir un espace de réengagement à un non ferme à la violence contre les femmes », a-t-il notamment déclaré.

L’Église luthérienne malgache existe depuis 1950. Elle compte plus de 3 millions de fidèles et résulte de la fusion des congrégations luthériennes des régions centrales et méridionales de l’île.
