I send you greetings of peace and grace from the RECOWA Secretariat, Abuja, Nigeria.

As we enter the new month of November, I write to wish you a happy new month. I wish to use this opportunity to give you a little update on the life of the Conference.

 Events for the month of October

  1. Synod on Synodality

The XVI General Assembly of Synod of Bishops for the synod on Synodality took place in Vatican City from 30 September- 29 October 2023. It began with an ecumenical vigil prayer on the evening of 30 September. This was followed by a three-day retreat for all the delegates at Sacrofanes, outside Rome. The official opening of the synod took place at Paul VI Hall, the official venue for synodal deliberations, on 4 October followed by the rest of the synodal events which lasted till the evening of 28 October. The closing mass took place on 29 October.  Africa has 67 delegates to the synod and 19 were from RECOWA (15 bishops, 2 priests, a religious woman and a lay woman). RECOWA also has a priest and a religious woman among the experts of the synod.

African voice was taken seriously at the synod. Five things need to be retained from the synod: Listening to everyone, co-responsibility, involvement of women in decision taking process of the Church, the formation of the clergy and laity on synodality and the importance of baptismal ministries. Each delegate was urged to transmit the synod experience to his episcopal conference from now till the next phase of the synod in October 2024.

  • Appointment of auxiliary Bishop for Ahiara, Nigeria

On 14 October, the Holy Father, Pope Francis appointed Msgr Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, C.M.F as the Auxiliary Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Nigeria.

  • Appointment of Archbishop for Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

On the 16 October 2023, Most Rev. Propsper Kontiebo, hitherto the Bishop of Tenkodogo, was appointed Metropolitan Archbishop of Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, thereby replacing His Eminence Philippe Cardinal Ouedraogo who has reached his retirement age.

  • Creation of the Diocese of Katsina in Nigeria

On the 16 October 2023, the Holy Father, Pope Francis created the Diocese of Kastina, Nigeria and appointed Msgr Gerard Musa as its first Bishop.

Events in November

  1. CEPACS Golden Jubilee

The Pan African Episcopal Committee for Social Communications (CEPACS) will mark the 50 years of its existence from 18-21 November. This will take place in Lagos, Nigeria. It will be attended by Bishops of SECAM and communications experts from Vatican and from all over the world.

  • SECAM Standing Committee

The CEPACS Golden Jubilee will be followed immediately by the Standing Committee of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM), at the same venue in Lagos, Nigeria from 21-22 November 2023.

  • RECOWA Presidential Council

The Presidential Council of RECOWA will meet in Abuja, Nigeria, from 21-24 November to do the evaluation of the year and the preparation for the RECOWA Standing Committee that will come up late January 2024.

  • Silver Jubilee of RECOWA Secretary General and 1st Deputy Secretary General

On 25 November, 2023, the Secretary General and the 1st Deputy Secretary General of RECOWA, Fr. Vitalis Anaehobi and Fr. Vincent-de-Paul Boro, respectively, will celebrate the silver jubilee of their priestly ordination at Holy Cross Parish, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Bureau du Secrétaire Général des CERAO Novembre 2023

Je vous envoie des salutations de paix et de grâce du Secrétariat des CERAO, Abuja, Nigeria.

Alors que nous entrons dans le nouveau mois de novembre, je vous écris pour vous souhaiter un bon mois. Je profite de cette occasion pour vous faire un petit point sur la vie de la Conférence.

Événements du mois d’octobre

  1. Synode sur la synodalité

La XVIe Assemblée générale du Synode des évêques pour le synode sur la synodalité s’est tenue dans la Cité du Vatican du 30 septembre au 29 octobre 2023. Elle a débuté par une veillée œcuménique dans la soirée du 30 septembre. Cela a été suivi d’une retraite de trois jours pour tous les délégués à Sacrofanes, en dehors de Rome. L’ouverture officielle du synode a eu lieu le 4 octobre dans la salle Paul VI, lieu officiel des délibérations synodales, suivie du reste des événements synodaux qui ont duré jusqu’au soir du 28 octobre. La messe de clôture a eu lieu le 29 octobre. L’Afrique compte 67 délégués au synode et 19 provenaient des CERAO (15 évêques, 2 prêtres, une religieuse et une laïque). CERAO compte également un prêtre et une religieuse parmi les experts du synode.

La voix d’Afrique a été prise au sérieux lors du synode. Cinq choses sont à retenir du synode : l’écoute de chacun, la coresponsabilité, l’implication des femmes dans les processus décisionnels de l’Église et l’importance des ministères baptismaux, formation du clergé et laïcat sur la synodalité. Chaque délégué a été invité à transmettre l’expérience synodale à sa conférence épiscopale d’ici la prochaine phase du synode en octobre 2024.

  • Nomination d’un évêque auxiliaire pour Ahiara, Nigeria

Le 14 octobre, le Saint-Père François a nommé Mgr Simeon Okezuo NWOBi, CMF comme évêque auxiliaire du diocèse d’Ahiara, Nigeria.

  • Nomination de l’archevêque de Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Le 16 octobre 2023, Mgr Propsper KONTIEBO, jusqu’alors évêque de Tenkodogo, a été nommé archevêque métropolitain de Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, remplaçant ainsi Son Éminence le cardinal Philippe OUEDRAOGO qui a atteint l’âge de la retraite.

  • Création du diocèse de Katsina au Nigeria

Le 16 octobre 2023, le Saint-Père, Pape François, a créé le diocèse de Kastina, Nigeria et a nommé Mgr Gérard MUSA comme son premier évêque.

Événements en novembre

  1. Jubilé d’or du CEPACS

Le Comité Épiscopal Panafricain pour les Communications Sociales (CEPACS) fêtera du 18 au 21 novembre ses 50 ans d’existence. Cela aura lieu à Lagos, au Nigeria. Y participeront les évêques du SCEAM et des experts en communication du Vatican et du monde entier.

  • Comité Permanent du SCEAM

Le jubilé d’or du CEPACS sera immédiatement suivi par le Comité Permanent du Symposium des Conférences Episcopales d’Afrique et de Madagascar (SCEAM), au même endroit à Lagos, Nigeria, du 21 au 22 novembre 2023.

  • Conseil de Présidence des CERAO

Le Conseil de présidence des CERAO se réunira à Abuja, au Nigeria, du 21 au 24 novembre pour faire l’évaluation de l’année et pour la préparation du Comité Permanent des CERAO qui se réunira fin janvier 2024.

  • Jubilé d’argent du Secrétaire Général et du 1 er Secrétaire Général Adjoint des CERAO

Le 25 novembre 2023, le Secrétaire Général et le 1 er Secrétaire Général Adjoint des CERAO, le P. Vitalis ANAEHOBI et le P. Vincent-de-Paul BORO respectivement, célébreront le jubilé d’argent de leur ordination sacerdotale à la paroisse Holy Cross, Gwarinpa, Abuja.
