Apurou-se que o cardeal Jozef Tomko, prefeito emérito da Congregação para a Evangelização dos Povos, morreu em Roma às 5 horas da manhã de segunda-feira, 8 de agosto, aos 98 anos. O cardeal nascido na Eslováquia era o membro mais velho do Colégio dos Cardeais. Foi criado Cardeal em 1985 pelo Papa João Paulo II.
O Cardeal Tomko morreu em seu apartamento em Roma, onde foi cuidado pelas Irmãs da Caridade de São Vicente de Paulo. Ele havia sido internado no hospital Gemelli de Roma em 25 de junho devido a uma lesão na coluna cervical e voltou para casa no sábado, 6 de agosto, para continuar seus cuidados em casa, com uma enfermeira dedicada.
Durante sua permanência no hospital, recebeu a visita do Secretário de Estado do Vaticano, Cardeal Pietro Parolin. Ao receber a notícia de sua morte, a Conferência Episcopal Eslovaca convidou os fiéis a rezar pelo repouso da alma do Cardeal. A data do funeral em Roma e posteriormente em Košice será anunciada.
Uma mensagem inicial da Sala de Imprensa da Conferência Episcopal Eslovaca dizia: “É com o coração pesado e ao mesmo tempo com a esperança da ressurreição que anunciamos que Sua Eminência o Cardeal Jozef Tomko entregou hoje sua nobre alma ao Senhor, 8 de agosto de 2022, nas primeiras horas da manhã em sua residência em Roma, cercado por seus associados mais próximos. Convidamos a todos a incluí-lo em suas orações. Mais informações sobre o funeral em Roma e o sepultamento na Catedral de Santa Isabel em Košice, onde ele será enterrado, será fornecido em um futuro próximo.”

Des médias du Vatican, le correspondant de RECOWACERAO NEWS AGENCY attaché au bureau du Saint-Père à la Cité du Vatican a rapporté que le grand cardinal slovaque Josef Tomko est décédé lundi matin. Il était le préfet émérite de la Congrégation pour l’évangélisation des peuples et le doyen d’âge du Collège des cardinaux.
Il a été constaté que le cardinal Jozef Tomko, préfet émérite de la Congrégation pour l’évangélisation des peuples, est décédé à Rome le lundi 8 août à 5 heures du matin, à l’âge de 98 ans. Le cardinal d’origine slovaque était le membre le plus âgé du Collège des cardinaux. Il a été créé cardinal en 1985 par le pape Jean-Paul II.
Le cardinal Tomko est décédé dans son appartement à Rome, où il était soigné par les Sœurs de la Charité de Saint-Vincent de Paul. Il avait été admis à l’hôpital Gemelli de Rome le 25 juin en raison d’une blessure à la colonne cervicale, et il était rentré chez lui le samedi 6 août pour poursuivre ses soins à domicile, avec une infirmière dédiée.

La date des funérailles à Rome et ensuite à Košice sera annoncée.
Un premier message du Bureau de presse de la Conférence épiscopale slovaque disait : « C’est avec le cœur lourd et en même temps avec l’espoir de la résurrection que nous annonçons que Son Éminence le Cardinal Jozef Tomko a rendu sa noble âme au Seigneur aujourd’hui, Le 8 août 2022, aux petites heures du matin, à sa résidence à Rome, entouré de ses plus proches collaborateurs. Nous invitons tous à l’inclure dans leurs prières. Plus d’informations sur les funérailles à Rome et l’inhumation à la cathédrale Sainte-Élisabeth à Košice, où il sera enterré, sera fourni dans un proche avenir.”

From the Vatican Media, RECOWACERAO NEWS AGENCY Correspondent attached to the office of the Holy Father at the City of Vatican reported that the great Slovakian Cardinal Josef Tomko died on Monday morning. He was the Prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and the oldest member of the College of Cardinals.
It was gathered that Cardinal Jozef Tomko, prefect emeritus of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, died in Rome at 5 a.m. on Monday, 8 August, aged 98. The Slovak-born Cardinal was the oldest member of the College of Cardinals. He was created a Cardinal in 1985 by Pope John Paul II.
Cardinal Tomko died in his apartment in Rome, where he was cared for by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. He had been admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on June 25 due to an injury to his cervical spine, and he had returned home on Saturday, August 6 to continue his in-home care, with a dedicated nurse.
During his stay in the hospital, he was visited by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Upon receiving the news of his death, the Slovak bishops’ Conference invited the faithful to pray for the repose of the soul of the Cardinal. The date of the funeral in Rome and subsequently in Košice will be announced.
An initial message from the Press Office of the Slovak Bishops’ Conference read: “It is with a heavy heart and at the same time with the hope of resurrection that we announce that His Eminence Cardinal Jozef Tomko rendered his noble soul to the Lord today, August 8, 2022, in the early hours of the morning at his residence in Rome, surrounded by his closest associates. We invite all to include him in their prayers. More information about the funeral in Rome and the burial at St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral in Košice, where he will be buried, will be provided in the near future.”
