Benoît XVI a été enterré dans la crypte sous la basilique Saint-Pierre après sa messe funéraire le 5 janvier. Le cercueil du défunt pape a été enterré dans l’ancien lieu de sépulture de saint Jean-Paul II et de saint Jean XXIII, dont les restes ont été transférés aux parties supérieures de la basilique lors de leurs béatifications.

A rainha Cristina da Suécia, que morreu em 19 de abril de 1689, está enterrada em um sarcófago imediatamente à direita de Bento.
