Introduction 

From November 10 to 13, 2024, the Bishops of Benin convened in Lokossa for their 73rd plenary session. This event allowed them to reflect on various religious, social, and environmental issues while renewing their pastoral commitment.

1. Preservation of the Earth and the Environment 

The session began with a symposium on safeguarding the Earth, aligned with Pope Francis’ appeals in his encyclicals *Laudato Si’* and *Laudate Deum*. The bishops condemned the excessive use of pesticides and called for action against pollution, deforestation, and climate change.

2. Gratitude and Congratulations 

The bishops welcomed the Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature and expressed gratitude to Pope Francis for appointing a new Apostolic Nuncio. They also paid tribute to Archbishop Mark Gerard Miles for his dedicated service.

3. Significant Ecclesial Events 

– Celebration of the 50th priestly anniversary of Bishop Victor Agbanou. 

– 70th anniversary of the Marian Grotto in Dassa-Zoumè. 

– 10th anniversary of the Cardinal Bernardin Gantin Catholic School Complex. 

4. Participation in the Synod on Synodality 

The conference highlighted the contribution of Bishop Coffi Roger Anoumou at the Synod in Rome, emphasizing the importance of a participatory and fraternal Church.

5. Preparations for the 2025 Jubilee Year 

Pope Francis will officially open the 2025 Jubilee Year in Rome. Preparatory activities include a pilgrimage to Yamoussoukro and moments of devotion, such as welcoming the relics of Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus.

6. Launch of Lumen Christi TV 

The bishops celebrated the launch of the Catholic channel Lumen Christi on terrestrial television, designed to serve as a tool for evangelization and spiritual growth.

7. Social and Political Issues 

– The bishops commended the government for infrastructure improvements while calling for solutions to poverty, suicides, and accidents. 

– They urged for a peaceful political climate before the upcoming elections and stressed the need to uphold democratic values. 

8. Tribute to the National Conference of the Nation’s Vital Forces 

A symposium and the establishment of a National Day of Renewal for the Nation will mark the 35th anniversary of this historic event.
